Jost (Norka-1)

There are two Jost families that travelled together from the German village of Burgbracht to the Volga German colony of Norka. Their relationship to each other needs further research.

(1) Johann Georg Jost, son of Georg & Anna Jost, was born 29 March 1721 and baptized 4 April 1721 in Burgbracht. Anna Maria Freÿer, daughter of Ludwig & Elisabeth Freÿer, was baptized 4 November 1725 in Kefenrod. Johann Georg Jost and Anna Maria Freÿer were married in Kefenrod on 12 May 1749.

The baptisms of seven of their children are recorded in Germany: (1) Maria Catharina, baptized 10 August 1749 in Kefenrod, died 17 August 1749; (2) Johann Georg, baptized 6 August 1750 in Burgbracht; (3) Johannes, baptized in April 1753 in Burgbracht, died 20 March 1757; (4) Anna Kunigunda, baptized 21 January 1756 in Burgbracht; (5) Johannes, baptized 18 July 1757 in Burgbracht; (6) Anna Elisabetha, baptized 18 June 1762 in Burgbracht; and (7) Heinrich, baptized 27 June 1765 in Burgbracht.

Georg Jost, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Johann, age 18; Anna, age 15; Johannes, age 9; Elisabeth, age 8; Heinrich, age ½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 29 Aug 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper John Scott.

Georg Just [sic], his wife Anna Maria, and children (Johann Georg, age 20; Anna, age 17; Johannes, age 10; Anna Elisabeth, age 8) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that the mother Anna Maria died en route.

Georg Just, a farmer, his [new] wife Anna Kunigunda, and children (Johann Georg, age 19; Anna Kunigunda, age 17; Johannes, age 12; Anna Elisabeth, age 7) are recorded on the 1767 census of Norka in Household No. 189. They had settled there on 26 August 1767.

(2) Johann Heinrich Jost, son of Georg Jost, and Anna Gertraud Jost, daughter of Daniel Jost, married in Burgbracht on 8 March 1747.

The baptism of one child is recorded in Burgbracht: Anna Elisabetha, baptized 14 September 1750.  Anna Gertraud died and was buried on 18 October 1750. Johann Heinrich Jost then married Anna Kunigunda Kaÿser, daughter of Hans Conrad Kaÿser from Illnhausen. The parish register of Kirchbracht records that Anna Kunigunda Kaÿser was born in Illnhausen and baptized on 6 June 1728.

The baptisms of four children to Johann Heinrich & Anna Kunigunda are recorded in the Burgbracht parish register: (1) Anna Maria, baptized 11 December 1751; (2) Anna Elisabetha, baptized April 1754; (4) Johann Georg, baptized 12 June 1760, died 11 April 1762; and (4) Johann Adam, baptized 18 September 1763.

Heinrich Jost, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Anna, age 18; Elisabeth, age 15; Johann, age 3) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 29 Aug 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper John Scott.

Heinrich Just [sic], his wife Anna, and children (Anna Maria, age 18; Anna Elisabeth, age 16; Johann Adam, age 3) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that both parents and son Johann Adam died en route.

Daughter Anna Maria married Melchior Schneider and is recorded on the 1767 census of Norka in Household No. 187 along with her sister [Anna] Elisabeth. They had settled there on 26 August 1767.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that these Jost families came from the German district of Isenburg.
