Johann Pauly, a single cobbler (Schuhmacher), arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the Danish galliot Der Engel Rafael under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Urbach on 3 July 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 38.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that he came from the German region of Nassau while the 1767 census records that he came from the German region of Darmstadt.
