Matthias Eske, a farmer, his wife Susanna Sophia, son Hartwig (age 8), and [step-]son Johann Bartel arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard a Danish galliot named Der Engel Rafael (Archangel Raphael) under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.
Martin Jesscky [sic], his wife Sophia Friederica [sic], and son Hartwig (age 10) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Tarlyk on 5 September 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 33.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Mattias Eske came from the German region of Mecklenburg. The 1767 census records that Martin [sic] Eske came from the German village of Borg in the Mecklenburg region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Eske family among the Volga German colonies.
