Nikolaus Zach, a German teacher (Deutschlehrer), and his wife Gertruda arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 16 May 1766 aboard the Russian galliot named Katharina Eleonora under the command of Skipper Peter Rehder.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Köhler on 10 August 1767. He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 23 along with another wife Maria Magdalena. There is a note on the 1767 Köhler census that Nikolaus Zach moved to the colony of Semenovka in 1768.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Nikolaus Zach was a teacher of the German language while the 1767 census records that he was a farmer.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Zach family among the Volga German colonies.
