Discussion & Documentation

Johann Wilhelm Holz, a craftsman (Handwerker), his wife Maria Elisabeth, and son Johann David (age 9¾) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard a Danish galliot named Der Engel Rafael (Archangel Raphael) under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Urbach on 3 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 43.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Wilhelm Holz came from the German region of Prussia. The 1767 census records that Johann Wilhelm Holz came from the German village of Halle in the Brandenburg district.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Holz family among the Volga German colonies.
