Mathias [sic] Gareis & Anna Maria Wagner were married on 8 April 1766 in the Lutheran Church of Büdingen.
Joseph Gareis, a miller (Müller), and his wife Anna Maria [Wagner] arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard a pinque named Каргополь (Kargopol: a Russian City) under the command of Captain Lieutenant Moses Davydov along with his brother-in-law Johann Wagner (age 18).
They settled in the Volga German colony of Köhler on 21 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 6.
Joseph Gareis and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Köhler in Household No. Kl63.
The sons of Joseph Gareis are recorded on the 1834 census of Köhler in Households No. 69, 71, & 73.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Joseph Gareis came from the German region of Boehmen (Bohemia) while the 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Eger in Austria.
