Johannes Maurer was born in approximately 1792 in the Alsace region. He served in Napoleon's army and fought against the Russians. He was captured by the Russians, and in 1812, was settled in the Volga German colony of Mariental.
Johannes Mauer [sic] from Saarbrucken, Germany, married on 15 September 1814 in Mariental to Katharina Kohlbech.
Johannes Maurer is recorded there on the 1834 Census of Mariental in Household No. 116, on the 1850 Census of Mariental in Household No. 176. He does not appear on the 1857 Census of Mariental with his son, so must have died before 1850 (although his death is not recorded on the 1850 Census of Mariental).
The 1850 Census of Mariental records that three of his sons moved from Mariental to Luzern.
