Discussion & Documentation

Johann Georg Metzler, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Johann Metler, his wife Margaretha, and children (Martin, age 17; Appolonia, age 16; Eva, age 9) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Ober-Monjou on 7 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 10.

In 1788, Georg Metzler moved from Louis to Ober-Monjou.

The 1798 Census of Zug records Samuel Metzler from Ober-Monjou in Household No. Zg15.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Georg Metzler came from the German region of Laubach.
