Discussion & Documentation

Leonhard Unrein, a farmer, his wife Dorothea, and children (Margaretha, age 15; Georg, age 13; Margaretha [again], age 9; Nikolaus, age 7; Andreas, age 1½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax. They are traveling with a single woman, Kunigunda Unrein.

Leonhard Unrein, his wife Dorothea, and children (Margaretha, age 15; Michael, age 13; Magdalena, age 9; Nicolaus, age 7; Andreas, age 1) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that eldest daughter Margaretha and son Andreas died en route. The single Cunigunda Unrein is also recorded in the same group.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Ober-Monjou on 7 June 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 24.

Kunigunda Unrein is recorded on the 1798 census of Schönchen in Household No. Sn14 as the wife of Adam Frachtel.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Leonhard Unrein came from the German village of Busendorf.
