Discussion & Documentation

Johann Matthias Katzendorn, a single tailor (Schneider), arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 August 1766 aboard a galliot named Eva Maria under the command of Skipper Franz Christopher Schröder. Aboard the same ship was Barbara Katzendorn, a single woman. The relationship between them, if any, needs further research.

Both Johann Mathis [sic] Kazendorn and Barbara Kazendorn are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that Barbara died en route.

Mattias Katzendorn, a tailor (Schneider), his [new] wife Maria, and orphan Maria Bellinger (age 14) are recorded on a list of Beauregard recruits (Household No. 132) appended to the 1767 census of the Volga German colonies. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Katzendorn and Bellinger families.

Widower Mattias Katzendorn and his children are recorded on the 1798 census of Wittmann in Household No. Wm32.

Johann Georg Katzendorn, son of Mattias Katzendorn, and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Wittmann in Household No. 55.

The 1767 census records that he came from the German region of Arnweiler [Ahrweiler?].
