Johann Konrad Gussfeld, a military lieutenant, and his wife Anna Friedrika settled in the Volga German colony of Bauer on 1 March 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 47 along with their 2-month-old daughter Maria Elisabeth.

The 1767 census records that Johann Konrad Gussfeld came from the German village of Kühnhausen in Sachsen (Saxony).
