Discussion & Documentation

There are two Freund families from Alten Buseck that settled in the Volga German colonies. Their relationship to each other, if any, needs further research.

(1) Johann Philipp Freund, son of Johann Melchior Freund (b. 1703) & Anna Elisabeth Muhl (b. 1705), was born 20 April 1732 in Alten Buseck. He married Maria Brehmer.

They had the following children, each born in Alten Buseck: (1) Anna Katharina, born 31 August 1756; (2) Anna Maria, born 6 August 1758, died 5 July 1759; (3) Johann Georg, born 14 August 1761, died 3 May 1763; and (4) Johann Philipp, born 11 June 1764.

Johann Freund, his wife Maria, and children (Anna, age 11; Johann, age 2) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the galliot Anna Katharina under the command of Skipper Johann Joachim Janson.

Johann Philip Freund, his wife Maria, and children (Anna Catrina, age 11; Johann Philip, age 2¼) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Johann Philipp Freund, a tailor (Schneider), his wife Maria, and daughter Anna (age 12) are recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 54.

This Freund family is recorded on the 1798 census of Basel in Household No. Bs46.

The 1767 census records that Johann Philipp Freund came from the German village of Albungen [sic] in the Darmstadt region.

(2) Johann Philipp Freund, son of Johannes Freund (b. 1669) & Elisabeth Seuling (b. 1679), was born 26 March 1713 in Alten Buseck. He married Anna Maria Lambet.

They had the following children, each born in Alten Buseck: (1) Anna Katharina, born December 1741; (2) Johann Philipp, born March 1743, died 9 January 1746; (3) Anna Clara, born February 1745; (4) Johann Philipp, born June 1747, died 21 July 1748; (5) Maria Elisabeth, born June 1747; (6) Johann Philipp, born June 1749, died 1 June 1765; (7) Maria Barbara, born January 1752, died 15 May 1755; (8) Heinrich Balthasar, born March 1754; and (9) Anna Margaretha, born December 1760. The mother Anna Maria died 1 January 1765.

Johann Philipp Freund from Alten Buseck remarried to Anna Elisabetha Menzel from Grossen Buseck on 19 April 1766 in the City Lutheran Church of Friedberg.

Widower Philipp Freund, a farmer, and children (Heinrich Balthasar, age 16; Anna Margaretha, age 12) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the Danish galliot Der Engel Rafael under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.

They are recorded on the 1767 census of Warenburg in Household No. 98 with a note that they had fled while in Pokrovsk [Engels] and their whereabouts were unknown.

[Heinrich] Balthasar Freund (born 1754) is recorded on the 1798 census of Warenburg in Household No. Wr026.

The death of Konrad Heinrich Freund, son of Balthasar Freund, in 1826 is recorded on the 1834 census of Warenburg in Household No. 77.

Johann Peter Freund, son of Konrad Heinrich Freund, is recorded on the 1850 census of Warenburg along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Bauer.
