Jakob Santau, a merchant (Kaufmann), and his wife Elisabeth Margaretha settled in the Volga German colony of Merkel on 28 August 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 8.

The 1767 census records that Jakob Santau came from the German village of Seester in the province of Holstein.

There are no known male descendants of this family who continue among the Volga German colonies.
