Dietrich Hufnagel, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 September 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.
Joh. Dittr. Huffnagell, his wife Catharina, and son Jacob (age ¼) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that newborn Jacob died en route.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Ernestinendorf on 3 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 10.
In 1796, Dietrich Hufnagel and his family moved from Ernestinendorf to Orlovskaya.
Widow Katharina Hufnagel, her daughter, and daughter's family are recorded on the 1798 census of Orlovskaya in Household No. Or30.
The 1767 census records that Dietrich Hufnagel came from the German village of Westhofen in the Hessen region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
