Johannes Kohler, a mason (Maurer), and his wife Christina settled in the Volga German colony of Degott on 18 July 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 7.
Jakob Kohler and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Degott in Household No. 7.
The 1767 census records that Johannes Kohler came from the German village of Schlettstadt in the Alsace region.
