Franz Joseph Mermis and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Herzog on 14 July 1766. Franz Joseph Mermis, a soldier (Soldat), his wife Katharina, and their son Obert [Hubert] (age 2) are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 26.

Hubert Mermis and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Herzog in Household No. Hr05.

The 1767 census records that Franz Joseph Mermis came from the village of Schärflond in France.
