Discussion & Documentation

Philipp Weltz and his wife Katharina are recorded on the 1775 census of the Volga German colony of Schilling in Household No. 85 along with his daughter (Barbara, age 1½) and stepsons Christian Schargenus (age 7½) and Ambrosius Schargenus (age 5). Katharina is the widow of Johann Schargenus with whom she had arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Researcher "Habermann" on the forum of wolgadeutsche.net reports that Barbara, daughter of Johann Philipp Wels & Katharina Roth, was born in Schilling on 12 September 1774.
