Discussion & Documentation

Johann [Michael] Hoffmann, a single man, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Kamenka on 20 June 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 92 along with his new wife Dorothea and 1-week-old daughter Elisabeth.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Hoffmann was a cobbler from the German region of Isenburg while the 1767 census records that he was a farmer from the vilage of Hanau.
