Johann Georg [sic] Hertel, a tailor (Schneider), and his wife Elisabeth arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 May 1766 aboard the galliot Anna Katharina under the command of Skipper Daniel Geier.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Orlovskaya on 5 March 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 72.
The 1834 census of Orlovskaya (Household No. 22) records that the entire family of Andreas Hertel was living in Ober-Monjou.
The 1767 census records that Gottfried [sic] Hertel came from the German village of Auerbach in the Pfalz region.
