Discussion & Documentation

Heinrich Schuhmann, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and children (Anton, age 9; Christina, age 4; Katharina, age 1½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 15 September 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Franz Nikolaus Schröder.

Heinrich Schuhmann, his wife Catharina, and son Anton (age 9) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that son Anton died en route.

Heinrich & Katharina are recorded on an addendum of Beauregard recruits that is appended to the 1767 census in Household No. 77 along with a note that they settled in the Volga German colony of Wittmann.

Ferdinand Schuckmann [sic], son of Heinrich Schuckmann, and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Wittmann in Household No. Wm16.

Ferdinand Schupmann [sic] and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Wittmann in Household No. 61.

Johann Joseph Schuckmann/Schupmann and his family immigrated to the US from Schönchen in 1876.

The 1767 census records that Heinrich Schuhmann came from the German village of Bassenheim.

Descendants of this family use both the surnames of Schupman and Schuckman.
