Hungen, Kr. Gießen, Hessen

Hungen is situated 20 km southeast of Gießen. It was first mentioned in writing in documents dated 28 July 782 in which the village was transferred from Emperor Charlemagne to Hersfeld Abby.

After the Solms-Hungen line died out in 1678, the town fell to the Solms-Braunfels line, and after its extinction to Count Wilhelm Moritz von Greifenstein.  In 1803, Hungen came to the Landgrafschaft of Hesse-Darmstadt which later became the Grand Duchy of Hesse.

Church:

The oldest parts of the church in Hungen date back to at least 1320 in the 12th century. The current building was completed in 1608 and combines architectural styles from the Romanesque to the Renaissance.

The lower tower shaft dates from the 12th century and received the upper floors in the middle of the 13th century. The late Gothic choir was built between 1514 and 1518, the nave in the Renaissance style between 1596 and 1608.

In 1907 the sacristy was added to the north side; otherwise the structural condition has remained unchanged since 1608.
