The initial settlement location for the Baumann family of Enders appears to be the colony of Schwab. Further research is needed to confirm this. What is known at this point follows:
On the 1798 census, the following information is recorded:
(1) Michael Baumann (age 24) from Schwab and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Enders in Household No. En17.
(2) Elisabeth Beitnitz Moritz née Baumann (age 29) from Schwab is recorded on the 1798 census of Enders in Household No. En32.
(3) The Movement Table appended to the 1798 census of Enders records that Maria Baumann, daughter of Johann Baumann, married Friedrich Nickelmann in Katharinenstadt in 1788. Friedrich Nickelmann is recorded on the 1798 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. Ka101, but he is recorded there with a different wife and several children from a previous wife (one of whom at age 9 could have been by Maria Baumann).
Researcher Andreas Idt records in the Wolgadeutsche.net Forum the following information from a meeting of the Kontora [Office of Immigrant Oversight] on 21 August 1775.
According to a report from the colony of Schwab by Vorsteher [Mayor] Johann Georg Schwab, a year and a half ago, colonist Johann Baumann died in the colony. He left behind a 29-year-old widow, a 2½-year-old son [the above noted Michael], and two daughters ages 11 and 5. The widow became engaged last spring in the colony of Enders to colonist Johann Endersen. He not only worked in the forge left by her husband, but also improved it, which satisfied the community, and he requests permission to marry the aforementioned widow.
According to the report, the widow Baumann was identified in the last census with a house, arable farmland, and livestock and equipment, except for a cart. The aforementioned colonist, Johann Endersen, is recorded as having been taken by a villainous mob [during the Pugachev Rebellion]. Therefore, after the death of [Johann Baumann], the house stands empty, and the remainder, along with livestock and other property, has been given to the foreman and company for safekeeping for the colony. His eighteen-year-old sister works in the colony for her living.
Following consultation with Major Piel, it was ordered that the house, livestock, and other property left by [Johann Baumann] be given to Endersen from the colony of Enders for safekeeping.
A subsequent entry in the minutes of the Kontora [Office of Immigrant Oversight] records that on 19 September 1775 as part of a list of marriage requests, Mayor Johann Georg Schwab was informed that bachelor Johann Wilhelm Enders from the colony of Enders could marry Maria Christina, the widow of Johann Baumann from Schwab and assume Baumann's state debt.
Gottfried Baumann, son of Michael Baumann, is recorded on the 1834 census of Enders in Household No. 24 along with a note that he died in 1819.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Baumann family among the Volga German colonies.
