Discussion & Documentation

Two Diehl families arrived together from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 2 August 1766 aboard an English frigate named Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax. They are presumed to be father and son, but this relationship needs to be confirmed.

(1) Philipp Diehl, a farmer, his wife Katharina, and son Philipp (age 15) arrived in Oranienbaum.

This Philipp Diehl (age 15) is believed to be the Nikolaus Diehl (age 12) who is recorded on the 1767 census of Ernestinendorf in Household No. 15 along with his stepfather Peter Schwabacher.

A note on the 1767 census records that Nikolaus Diehl relocated to the colony of Biberstein in 1768.

Peter Diehl from Kaneau, presumed son of Nikolaus Diehl, is recorded on the 1798 census of Biberstein in Household No. Bb35.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Philipp Diehl came from the German region of Nassau.

(2) Burghard Diehl, a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and son Konrad (age 3) arrived in Oranienbaum.

Berhard Diel [sic], his wife Maria Elisabeth, and son Johann Conrad (age 3) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

Burghardt Diehl, a farmer, his wife Elisabeth, and son Konrad (age 4) are recorded on the 1767 census of Kaneau in Household No. 79. They had arrived in Kaneau on 23 July 1767.

Son Konrad Diehl is recorded on the 1798 census of Paulskaya in Household No. Pl68.

Philipp Diehl from Kaneau, presumed son of Burghard Diehl, is recorded on the 1798 census of Paulskaya in Household No. Pl43.

The death of Philipp Diehl in 1830 is recorded on the 1834 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 62.

Johann Georg Diehl, son of Philipp Diehl, and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 117.

The death of Johann Georg Diehl in 1843 is recorded on the 1850 census of Paulskaya in Household No. 146.

Heinrich Diehl from Kaneau is recorded on the 1798 census of Schaffhausen in Household No. Sh43.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Burghard Diehl came from the German region of Nassau. The 1767 census records that he came from the German village of Wendelfeld [?] in the Nassau region.
