Discussion & Documentation

Johannes Hassel, a farmer, and his wife Margaretha are recorded on the 1767 census of Stahl am Tarlyk in Household No. 60 along with orphan Johann Eshouf [?] (age 10). They had settled there on 19 August 1767. The 1767 census does not record a relationship between the Hassel and Eshouf families.

The 1767 census records that Johannes Hassel came from the German village of Pegau in the region of Sachsen (Saxony).

There are no known surviving male lines of this Hassel family among the Volga German colonies.
