Discussion & Documentation

Christian Ertler [sic], a carpenter, his wife Margaretha, and daughters (Louisa, age 18; Dorothea, age 11) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.

Christian Hertel, his wife Anna Maria, and daughters (Louissa [sic] Elisabeth, age 18; Louissa [sic], age 14) are recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Oranienbaum in 1767 along with a note that both Christian and Anna Maria died in route.

It is not known in which colony the surviving daughters settled.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christian Ertler [sic] came from the German region of Dessau.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Hertel family among the Volga German colonies.
