The earliest mention of a village called Leonbronn dates to 1355.
Since 1975, Leonbronn has been administratively linked with neighboring villages into the municipality of Zaberfeld.

The church in Leonbronn dates back to a Medieval chapel in 1289. The parish church dedicated to St. James (Jakobus in German) has existed since 1485. The fortress tower is the oldest part of the current church building. It was renovated in 1750 and the nave expanded in 1773. The organ was moved to its current location in the balcony at this time.
Extensive renovations have taken place in 1940-41 and again in the 1980s.
The glass window in the south wall was designed by Erich Buschle in 1964.
