The oldest mention of the village of Mettenheim dates to 765-766. The village was originally a possession of the Bishopric of Worms. The region became known for its vineyards.
The castle of Mettenheim dates from at least 1393. It was destroyed by French revolutionary troops in 1793.
In 1709, Mettenheim became the residence of the Counts of Wartenberg.
Today, Mettenheim is administratively part of the municipality of Eich.

The baroque church in Mettenheim is known as the Pfarrkirche Bartholomäus. Its earliest known predecessor dates back to 771. The Bartholomäuskirche was built between 1748-1756 by master mason Blattner from Osthofen. It is built in the traditional hall style with balconies on three sides.The baptismal font dates from 1755.
The current organ in the Mettenheim church was built by brothers Johann Philipp and Johann Heinrich Stumm in 1762. It had two manuals plus pedal. In 1968, the Oberlinger company restored the instrument. Another restoration took place in 1987-88 by Förster & Nicolaus which restored the organ to its original state.
