Discussion & Documentation:

The marriage of Johannes Ackermann from Fulda & Eva Catharina [sic] Heel from Fulda is recorded in the parish register of the Lutheran Church in Büdingen on 13 May 1766. They are recorded there as colonists going to Russia, however, they did not actually go to Russia. They returned to Fulda where they were "remarried" on 1 February 1767 by the Catholic priest because, as Catholics, their marriage in the Lutheran Church in Büdingen was considered to have been illegitimate. The entry in the parish register of the Catholic Cathedral in Fulda reads:

"post peractem confessionem matrimonium convalidarunt Johannes Ackermann et Gertrud, Balthasaris Höhl filia de cujus valore dubitabatus, eoquod non tanquam vagi, sed tanquam fugitive pro illo tempore, coram praedicante in Büdingen illud contrahere attentaverant. Ego, novo consensus habito, matrimonium eorum ratificavi. Testes erant: Johannes Ackermann, pater sponsi, et Johannes Buch, omnes habitants am Graben.“

["After confession, they, Johannes Ackermann and Gertrud [sic], Balthasar Höhl's daughter, confirmed the wedding, doubting its validity, because in the meantime they were not on the move as vagabonds but as refugees, because they contest the contract in Büdingen. After the renewed agreement, the priest ratified the marriage. Witnesses were Johannes Ackermann, father of the groom, and Johannes Buch, both living ‘Am Graben’."]

They went on to have 3 children in Fulda: (1) Johann Georg, born 22 November 1766; (2) Johann Christoph, born 4 July 1768; and (3) Joseph, born 17 November 1771.

The birth of Johannes Ackermann has not been located in Fulda. The birth of his wife Eva Gertrud Höhl, daughter of Balthasar Höhl & Anna Catharina Fideler, is recorded on 3 March 1739 in the parish register of the Cathedral in Fulda.

The death on 29 February 1776 of widow Eva Gertrud Ackermann née Höhl is recorded in Fulda. The death of Johannes Ackermann in Fulda has not been located.

There are no known surviving male lines of this family among the Volga German colonies.
