Johann Bartel, his mother, and his stepfather Martin/Matthias Eske arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the Danish galliot Der Engel Rafael under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.

They settled in the Volga German colony of  Stahl am Tarlyk on 5 September 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 33.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Bartel family among the Volga German colonies.
