Bertel*
Christian Bartel [sic], a mechanic, and his wife Anna Maria arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the galliot Die Fortuna under the command of Skipper Peter Stahl.
Christian Pertel [sic], his new wife Katharina Dorothea, and [step-]daughter Christina Sophia [surname not recorded] are recorded on the 1775 census of Grimm in Household No. 29.
They are believed to be the same couple recorded on the 1798 census of Grimm in Household No. Gm010 as Christian Bertel [sic]. They are recorded there along with Christian's son-in-law Johannes Müller and his wife Anna Sophia. However, the 1834 census of Grimm (Household No. 69) identifies this Johannes Müller as Christian Bertel's brother-in-law (sister's husband).
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Christian Bartel came from the German region of Hannover.
The Bartel/Bertel surname does not continue among the Volga German colonies.
