Johann Dewald, a farmer, his wife Margaretha, daughter Dorothea (age 5-weeks), and [step-]son Johann [Riehl] (age 14) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 16 August 1766 aboard a snow-brig named Neptunus (Neptune) under the command of Skipper Johann Graap.
Johann Dipold [sic], his wife Margretha, daughter Dorothe. (age ¾), and [step-]son Johan [Riehl] are recorded on a list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that daughter Dorothea died in route.
Heinrich Dewald (age 29), a farmer, his wife Anna Margaretha (age 30), daughter Maria Katharina (age 3-weeks), and stepson Johannes Riehl (age 16) are recorded on the 1767 census of Kautz in Household No. 26. They had arrived in Kautz on 21 August 1767.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johann Dewald came from the German region of Pfalz. The 1767 census also records that Heinrich Dewald came from the German village of Eich in the Pfalz.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Dewald family among the Volga German colonies.
