Johann Nikolaus Dietz, a craftsman (Handwerker), and his wife Elisabeth settled in the Volga German colony of Dobrinka on 15 April 1765. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 53.

The 1767 census records that Johann Nikolaus Dietz came from the German town of Kiel in the Holstein region.
