Valentin Engel, a farmer, his wife Anna Katharina, and children (Johann Friedrich, age 17¼; Charlotta Dorothea, age 15¼; Georg Balthasar, age 10; Katharina Elisabeth, age 8¼) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 22 July 1766 aboard a Danish galliot named Der Engel Rafael (Archangel Raphael) under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Laub on 19 August 1767. Valentin died and his widow and children are recorded in Laub on the 1767 census in Household No. 63.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Valentin Engel came from the German region of Pfalz. The 1767 census records that widow Anna Katharina Engel came from the German village of Kirsbach in the Kurpfalz region.
There are no known surviving male lines of this Engel family among the Volga German colonies.
