Discussion & Documentation

Valentin Engel, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 8 August 1766 aboard the Danish galliot Der Engel Rafael under the command of Skipper Ehlert Kongsted.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Laub on 19 August 1767. Valentin died and his widow and children are recorded in Laub on the 1767 census in Household No. 63.

The 1767 census records that widow Anna Katharina Engel came from the German village of Kirsbach in the Kurpfalz region.

There are no known surviving male lines of this Engel family among the Volga German colonies.
