Discussion & Documentation

Johann Christoph Ermisch, a miller (Müller), and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Christoph Ermisch, his wife Charlotta, and children (August [age not recorded], Fried. Christoph, age 6; Joh. Elisabeth, age 2½) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that mother Charlotta and daughter Joh. Elisabeth died en route.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Orlovskaya on 7 June 1767 and are recroded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 16. They are recorded on the 1798 census of Orlovskaya in Households No. Or04, Or10, and Or36.

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Johann Christoph Ermisch came from the German region of Zerbst.
