Franz Ertel, a farmer, his wife Sophia, son Joachim (age 17½), and [step-]son Paul [Müller] (age 14) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 29 May 1766 aboard the galliot named Adler (Eagle) under the command of the Skipper Paul Adolph Drath.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Dinkel on 12 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 10 along with his stepson Paul Müller.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Franz Ertel came from the German region of Schwaben (Swabia). The 1767 census records that Franz Ertel came from the German village of Dinkelscherben in the region of Schwaben (Swabia).
There are no known surviving male lines of this Ertel family among the Volga German colonies.
