Franz Ertel, a farmer, and his family arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 3 June 1766 aboard the galliot Adler under the command of Skipper Paul Adolph Drath.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Dinkel on 12 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 10 along with his stepson Paul Müller.

The 1767 census records that Franz Ertel came from the German village of Dinkelscherben in the district of Schwaben (Swabia).
