Joseph Ertel, a farmer, and his wife Anna Barbara settled in the Volga German colony of Rohleder on 14 June 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 21.

The 1798 census of Kaneau records Georg Ertel and his brother Konrad from Rohleder in Household No. Kn32.

The 1767 census records that Joseph Ertel came from the German region of Ulm while his wife Anna Barbara came from the German region of Trier.
