Johann Gedde, a farmer, and his wife Johanna arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 3 June 1766 aboard the galliot Alder under the command of Skipper Paul Adolph Drath.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Dinkel on 12 July 1767. Johann is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 17 along with new wife Elisabeth.
The 1767 census records that Johann Goethe [sic] came from the German village of Stubben in the Holstein region.
