Johann Klaus Gies, a farmer, and his wife Christina Brigitte settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Tarlyk on 13 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 19.
The 1767 census records that Johann Klaus Gies came from the German village of Bergedorf in the Hamburg region.
