Discussion & Documentation

Lebrecht Gräf, a single man, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig Mercurius under the command of Skipper Christian Heinrich Abelßen.

He settled in the Volga German colony of Urbach on 13 July 1767 and is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 22.

In 1786, Johann Karl Graf and his brother Christoph moved from Schäfer to Urbach.

Karl Gräf, his wife, and his brother Johann Christian [sic] are recorded on the 1798 census of Urbach in Household No. Ur28 along with a note that all three of them are working in Katharinenstadt.

On 8 October 1802, colonist [widow] DuWetter [sic] of Katharinenstadt petitioned the Kontora [Office of Immigrant Oversight] for permission to accept into her household her son-in-law colonist [Christoph] Gref from Urbach.

Christoph Gref and his family are recorded on the 1834 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 288.

The death of Christoph Gref in 1838 is recorded on the 1850 census of Katharinenstadt in Household No. 384. His widow is recorded there as Christina TuVietter [sic].

Friedrich Gräf moved from Urbach to Mariental in 1834.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Lebrecht Gräf was a cobbler from the German region of Sachsen (Saxony). The 1767 census records that he was a farmer from the German village of Mansfeld.
