Discussion & Documentation

There are two Greilich men recorded in Volga German records. Their relationship to each other, if any, requires further research.

(1) Wilhelm Grälich arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 4 July 1766 aboard the English frigate Love & Unity under the command of Skipper Thomas Fairfax.

Willhelm Greulich [sic] is recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

He is recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Nieder-Monjou in Household No. 87 [surname errantly published as Grenlich].

Johann Wihelm Grälich from Orlovskaya and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Kaneau in Household No. Kn33 along with a note that he is living in the colony of Schwed where he is serving as a teacher. Another note indicates that his son Ferdinand was living with Dr. Maier in Saratov.

In 1818, Johann Christian Greilich relocated from Kaneau to Katharinenstadt.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Wilhelm Grälich was a student from the German region of Pommern (Pomerania). The 1767 census records that he was a baker (Bäcker) from the German village of Hogen [?] in the region of Pommern (Pomerania).

(2) Christoph Greinlich [sic] arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 12 May 1766 aboard the galliot Anna Katharina under the command of Skipper Daniel Geier.

Christoph Greilich, a single estate manager (Gutsverwalter), is recorded on an appendix to the 1767 census of Nieder-Monjou in Household No. 63 [surname errantly published as Grenlich].

It is not known in which colony he settled.

The 1767 census records that Christoph Greilich came from the German region of Hamburg.

There are no known surviving descendants of Christoph Greilich among the Volga German colonies.
