Discussion & Documentation

Johann[es] Haal, his wife Anna, and children (Johann, age 7; Adam, age 4; Nikolaus, age 1½) immigrated to Russia, arriving from Lübeck at the port in Oranienbaum aboard the ship Mann & Frau on 18 June 1766.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Preuss on 15 July 1767 where they are recorded on the 1767 census in Household No. 67.

In 1797, widower Johann Adam Haal moved from Preuss to Leichtling.

Adam Haal and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Leichtling in Household No. Lg34.

Prior to 1816, Adam Haal and his family relocated to the colony of Herzog where they are recorded on the 1834 census in Households No. 10 & 87. Adam's death is recorded there in 1825.

Johannes Haal, son of Adam Haal, and his family relocated to the colony of Friedental before 1850 and are recorded on the 1850 census of Friedental in Household No. 4.

When the daughter colony of Friedental was abandoned, the descendants of this family relocated to the daughter colony of Liebental.

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Johannes Haal is a farmer while the 1767 census records that he is a basket weaver (Korbflechter).

The 1767 census records that Johannes Haal came from the German village of Werheim in the Kurtrier region.
