Discussion & Documentation

There are two Hanke families recorded in Orlovskaya. They are believed to be father and son, but further research is needed to confirm this.

(1) Johann Gottfried Hanke (age 66), a widower, is recorded on the 1767 census of Orlovskaya in Household No. 19 along with his son-in-law Martin Zorn.

The 1767 census does not record from where Johann Gottfried Hanke came.

(2) Christian Heincke [sic], a cobbler, his wife Sophia, mother (Eva Johanna), and sister Maria (age 18) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.

Christian Hancke [sic], his wife Dorothea, mother (Beate), and sister Margaretha Elis. (age 19) are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767 along with a note that wife Dorothea and sister Margaretha Elis. died en route.

Christian Hanke (age 26), a cobbler (Schuhmacher), and his [new] wife Louisa [widow of Johann Friedrich Berger - See Berger Family] settled in the Volga German colony of Orlovskaya on 3 August 1767. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 14 along with stepson Wilhelm Ferdinand Götz (age 9) [See Götz Family] and mother Beate (age 60).

Both the Oranienbaum passenger list and the 1767 census record that Christian Hanke came from the German region of Zerbst.

Descendants of this Hanke family are recorded on the 1834 census of Orlovskaya in Households No. 49 and 84.
