Michael Hauerstein, a farmer, settled in the Volga German colony of Stahl am Karaman on 9 July 1766. He is recorded on there on the 1767 census in Household No. 9 along with wife Anna Katharina, the widow of Friedrich Senderle.

In 1796, Friedrich Hauerstein moved from Stahl am Karaman to Urbach.

The 1767 census records that Michael Hauerstein came from the German region of Ansbach and that Anna Katharina came from the German city of Karlsruhe in the Durlach region.
