Joseph Hein (age 16) settled in the Volga German colony of Graf on 10 June 1766. He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 20 along with his stepfather Johann Gottlieb Janson. The 1767 census records Johann Gottlieb Janson along with stepson Joseph Hein relocated to the colony of Rohleder in 1768.

The 1767 census records that his mother came from the German region of Würzburg.
