Christoph Hellfuss, a craftsman (Handwerker), and his family settled in the Volga German colony of Graf on 14 February 1767. He is recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 40 along with his wife Maria Anna and son Johannes (age ¼).

The 1767 census records that Christoph Hellfuss came from the German village of Kahla in the region of Sachsen (Saxony).
