Discussion & Documentation

Joseph Herbert from Blanckenau [sic] & Anna Margaretha Hass [sic] from Grossenlieder were married 14 May 1766 in Büdingen.

Joseph Herber and his wife Anna Margaretha arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 13 September 1766 aboard the hooker Die Jungfer Dietrika under the command of Skipper Christian Korsholm.

Joseph Herber and his wife Anna Margreta are recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.

They settled in the Volga German colony of Köhler on 21 August 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 36.

In 1790, Joseph Herber and his family moved from Köhler to Semenovka.

[Some translations of the 1798 census of Köhler record a Gustav Herber, son of the deceased Friedrich Herber, in Household No. Kl09, but this is incorrect. He is Gustav Köhler, son of the deceased Gottfried Köhler.]

The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Joseph Herber was a tailor while the 1767 census records that he was a farmer.

Both documents record that Joseph Herber came from the German region of Fulda.
