Gottlieb Herbst, a single man, arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 21 July 1766 aboard the snow-brig Mercurius under the command of Skipper Christian Heinrich Abelßen.
He married Anna Katharina Lehmann who died and he remarried to Anna Katharina. They settled in the Volga German colony of Urbach on 13 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 5 along with his stepson, David Lehmann.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that Gottlieb Herbst was a farmer while the 1767 census records that he was a craftsman (Handwerker). The 1767 census records that Gottfried [sic] Herbst came from the German village of Sangerhausen in the region of Sachsen (Saxony).
