There are two Herr families who are believed to be related because the 1767 census records that they both came from the German village of Orb. The first has been located in the parish registers of Orb, but additional research on the second is needed to determine what, if any, the relationship is between the two.
(1) Johannes Peter Herr, son of Johannes Jacob & Anna Maria Herr, was baptized 5 November 1736 in Orb. He married there on 31 January 1764 to Barbara Hessberger, daughter of Johannes Heinrich Hessberger & Anna Barbara Grauel. Barbara Hessberger had also been baptized in Orb on 30 March 1735. The baptism of one son of Johannes Peter Herr & Barbara Hessberger is recorded in the parish register of Orb: Johann Jacob, baptized 29 November 1764.
Johann[es] Peter Herr, a farmer, his wife Barbara, and son Johann [Jakob] (age 1½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 10 August 1766 aboard a ship under the command of Skipper Nikolaus Peter Pink.
Single Johann Peter Herr is recorded on the list of colonists being transported from St. Petersburg to Saratov in 1767.
[Johannes] Peter Herr, a farmer, and his [new] wife Anna are recorded on a list of Beauregard recruits appended to the 1767 census in Household No. 65.
They are recorded on the 1798 census of Luzern in Household No. Lz33.
(2) Jakob Herr, a farmer, and his wife Elisabeth arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 19 July 1766 aboard a galliot named Kronstadt under the command of Lieutenant Samuel Gibbs.
Jakob Herr, his wife Elisabeth, and daughter Barbara (age 1) are recorded on the 1767 census of Pfeifer in Household No. 23. They had settled there on 15 June 1767.
Widow Elisabeth Herr [née Böhm] is recorded on the 1798 census of Pfeifer in Household No. Pf51. Daughter Barbara is recorded there in Household No. Pf50.
The Oranienbaum passenger list records that both Johann[es] Peter Herr & Jakob Herr came from the German region of Mainz. The 1767 census records that they both came from the German village of Orb.
