Valentin Hinkel, a farmer, his wife Anna, and children (Johann[es], age 4; Anna Katharina, age ½) arrived from Lübeck at the port of Oranienbaum on 11 June 1766 aboard the snow-brig named Der Jäger under the command of Skipper Gabriel Will.
They settled in the Volga German colony of Laub on 12 July 1767 and are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 22.
Johannes Hinkel, son of Valentin Hinkel, and his family are recorded on the 1798 census of Laub in Household No. Lb55.
Johann[es] Hinkel is recorded on the 1811 census of Laub in Household No. 56 along with a note that he relocated to the colony of Straub in 1807.
Johannes Hinkel from Laub and his son (Johannes, age 1) are recorded on the 1811 census of Straub in Household No. 57 along with a note that he had arrived in Straub from Laub in 1805.
The 1767 census records that Valentin Hinkel came from the German village of Ober-Ramstadt in the Darmstadt region.
