Johann Gottlieb Janson, a craftsman (Handwerker), his wife Maria Anna, and her son Joseph Hein (age 16) settled in the Volga German colony of Graf on 10 June 1766. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Household No. 20 along with a note that they relocated to the colony of Rohleder in 1768.

The 1767 census records that Johann Gottlieb Janson came from Böhmen (Bohemia) and that Maria Anna came from the region of Würzburg.
